I decided to celebrate Martin Luther King’s birthday by celebrating the rich cultural history I belong to. Instead of focusing on the depressing realities, I am embracing how much talent and joy is shared in our artists. It is the melody of a people who when they are knocked down, get back up. It’s amazing to be a part of that. I wish more people saw it this way.
I turned this holiday into my own personal day of appreciation of black culture. I jammed all afternoon to 50s and 60s soul music. I also loved this spoken word poem done by J. Ivy on local Chicago Show, Windy City Live. Hope you are celebrating culture too.
